“If you can’t measure it, you can not improve it” is a version of Lord Kelvin’s valid observation of the significance of quantification of matters under consideration.
In the 1980s, Lyin’ Brian Mulroney blatantly told the nation that he would do an official investigation about running accusations of him having lied to the nation when, pre-electorally, he had solemnly promised “no truck or trade with the Yankees”. To his and our surprise it turned out that he had indeed lied all around but the lies were benign, he said. In light of the above, he rushed to the “Yankees” with a Canadian “Free Trade Initiative”, the FTA. This was another great Mulronian lie, given that the Americans had already on their books legislation to get FT with Canada, and to do it as soon as they had a realistic chance of succeeding. Incidentally, after Karlheinz Schreiber piloted an Airbus deal, ordinary Canadians may have suspected highly unflattering conduct by our Prime Minister and someone resembling Karlheinz Schreiber.
We were given neither the estimated wealth gain from the FTA “experimentation”, nor the realized gain to compare the two and assess the Mulroney business acumen. But I vividly recall a television interview of a long-distance trucker: “Yes, the FTA is good for me as it keeps me rolling. I carry Canadian candy to California, and American candy to Canada”, he explained straight-faced. I think of that interview frequently. Bu I forget whether he was sarcastic.
I wrote the above as background to the story of the Ottawa government forcing the Free Trade Deal onto Canadians. They fooled us, didn’t they?
Mulroney is by now gone, with a first class sendoff at the expense of Canada, that free ticket due to him having changed Canada “more than any other PM we had”. How true. How sad.
Mark Carney is now in charge of the Land and I believe he is a decent man, pacing in the lineup of “Leaders” awaiting their turn to talk to Trump. Mark has already cancelled one Canadian Law at Donald’s command. This is bad! That alone commands a strong apology, Justin Trudeau style. And that is not all.
At no time has any version of Canada’s Free Trade with the USA been professionaly assessed. This must be done now, before taking another step, before even a shy one is taken. And this must be taken seriously. If the negotiators had a free lunch in the past we can forget that. But we must learn about the preempting of the Canadian automobile sector by Chevy and Dodge has affected the evolution of the economy of Canada, all of us should know that. And we must know the shift in the Canadian economy ownership after Mulroney did FT to us. This and more, we must know all in full detail before Mark Carney meets with Trump again.
